Welcome! My name is Katie, and I blog here at Good Golly Ginger.
My Latest Projects
WIP'S
I'm currently working on the Gypsy Wife quilt, designed by Jen Kingwell.
What you should know about me...
- I was taught to quilt via YouTube, Craftsy, and all the lovely blogs out there on the web.
- I stitch on a Juki TL2010Q. I also own a Kenmore something or other.
- My favorite color is red. Some days it changes to a random shade of blue-green.
- I started quilting because I fell in love with free-motion-quilting.
- I quilt my own quilts on an HandiQuilter Sixteen that was given to me by my husband's awesome cousin. It was barely working when we got it due to fire damage, but we fixed it up, and now it holds the name 'Big Smokey'.
- I use Aurifil thread for piecing and Isacord thread for quilting.
- My favorite fabrics are from Art Gallery Fabrics.
- I love to design quilt patterns.
- My husband and I are pilots, and we own a small airplane.
- My quilt style is modern-scrappy-patchwork. Let's just say that my style is evolving. I also love to foundation paper piece.
- I wish I could buy more fabric from Liberty of London, Cloud 9, Birch, and Oakshott.
- I am looking forward to the release of Acorn Trail by Birch, Arizona by Art Gallery, Emmy Grace by Art Gallery. Can you tell I like fabric with a nature theme?
- My favorite movie is Frozen. I've watched it over 50 times with my girls. I might as well embrace it and "Let it go".
- My favorite time to sew is during afternoon nap time. Unfortunately, I don't get a nap.
- My house is terribly unkempt. I would rather be sewing. I strive for sanitary, but certainly not spotless.
- I plan to start selling patterns next fall. I'm designing now, and I hope to have at least 3 patterns on Craftsy.com in September.
- My favorite shows are Seinfeld and The Office. I Tivo the reruns, and I watch them just about every night.
- I am married to my best friend, the best guy in the whole world. He is also the smartest and incredibly handsome too. I call him Mr. Ginger here on the blog, and he built my quilt frame for the HQ16. We have two adorable daughters who are gingers (ages 3 and 6), and 'Good Golly', I love them so much!
- Tomorrow I turn 34 years-old! :)
Here is a free foundation paper piecing pattern I recently designed (just click on the picture to download)...
Quilty Tip
If you have made it down this far. Thank you! Here is a tip for you. Those Clover Wonder Clips are fantastic! Did you know that they have a quarter inch mark? Use Wonder Clips instead of pins to line up your blocks!
This makes foundation paper piecing so much easier! I call it the cheat and check method. Open up your pieces and verify everything is aligned the way you like it. Perfect! Go stitch it up!
Question For You
I am thinking of updating my longarm machine with the Quilter's Cruise Control. My HQ16 is currently unregulated, and I have hit a quilting wall with it. The Handiquilter stitch regulator is $2K plus I would have to update the computer pod for another $500. The Quilter's Cruise Control, however, is $500 total and works with my machine. I don't think I have to update the pod, maybe I still do. Do you have any recommendations for me? I'm not seeing too many reviews online. If you have used the Quilter's Cruise Control, then I would love to hear about your experiences.

Happy Stitching,
Happy Birthday! I am also a June baby (5th)! I LOVE the paper piecing block and will definitely be trying it very soon! I just did my first this week and I am addicted! Your quilts are gorgeous and that mermaid pillow and the owl practically jump off the page! You have such an amazing gift!
ReplyDeleteGreat post Katie! Thanks for sharing so much about yourself and for the tip on using clips to see how pieces are lining up. I knew there was a 1/4 mark on them but I never thought to use them in that manner. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteHere from the hop...welcome to the world of blogging quilters/crafters!!
ReplyDeleteI may have to go get some clips. I thought they were just for bindings.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday for tomorrow Katie. I hope it's a super special day for you and your good golly family. Thanks so much for sharing yourself on this post. It's lovely to get to know you a bit better and I'm looking forward to checking out what's next.....
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! I really enjoyed getting to know so much more about you. Private pilots license? Totally sweet! I am afraid I can't help answer your question, but I hope you find some satisfactory responses from folks in the know!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! Thanks for the clip tip :) And the free pattern is great, thank you!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you Katie. Frozen is a big hit in our house too :-) I have two girls as well. Sorry no suggestion regardging your question.
ReplyDeleteIt's so interesting to get to know the person behind the posts. Both pilots? Coolio. Own a plane? Way coolio! HQ 16? Awesomeness! I hope someone can help you with your regulator question. :)
ReplyDeleteYour birthday is one day before my wee one, you must be a hard case Chickie too?
ReplyDeleteSorry I can't help you with your regulator question thingy but I can help you by downloading your free paper pieced block! Awesome!
And thankyou, now I definitely have to get myself some wonder clips, I had no idea that they were multipurpose?
Lovely to meet you Katie!
your Repository pattern is gorgeous - thank you for sharing. And a big happy birthday for tomorrow :-)
ReplyDeleteWonder clips, I've managed to not buy any so far ... but this 1/4" marks is making them more tempting!
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to buy some Wonder Clips but they are expensive; maybe they are worth it! I am a paper piecing addict and love your pattern, thanks for sharing. Your goals are great and I will look forward to seeing your future patterns. Happy Birthday!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! and thanks for sharing a nice tip.
ReplyDeletehello and nice to meet you! Thanks so much for the free pattern, it's lovely! That tip about the wonderclips is brilliant, I had no idea! I love to paper piece too and when lining up sections I try to do it using pins and the layers are just too thick, I'll try this.
ReplyDeleteOh I'm dong the Gypsy Wife Quilt Along too! I recognise your blocks from the flickr group! :D and Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteHi from another ginger! :) OHHH I am on my way to buy some wonderclips!! I had NO idea and now I NEED them badly :) I just started PPing and this will work SO much cleaner than glue. Thank you thank you thank you!!
ReplyDeleteMy house is never 'clean' either. Striving for sanitary - I love that!! :)
Bless you for admitting you strive for sanitary!!! That, and a goal to never end up on Hoarders: Buried Alive, are my only housekeeping 'regimen'. :D Your Juki is on my Christmas list this year -- maybe Santa will bring it? I'm sorry I can't be of any help with the cruise control. I only have my one sewing machine, a Viking Emerald 203. Good luck with figuring it out though!
ReplyDeleteLovely pattern, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who neglects the housework for sewing!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of the wonderclips for paper piecing! Must go buy some.
ReplyDeleteHi Katie! I never knew the wonder clips had the quarter inch mark?!?! I'm going to have to see for myself when I get home. You have some lovely projects and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us in the future!
ReplyDeleteYet another reason why I need to buy some wonder clips! Thanks for the tip. My house certainly falls into the "terribly unkepmt" camp too. I'd rather be sewing or reading about other people's sewing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your pattern! I use wonder clips for everything, even stitching my girls clothes.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt pattern is very fresh and cute. Good luck on your goal to have three patterns on Craftsy; you can do it!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip with the clover clips! I've been avoiding buying them, but it looks like they'd really help with paper piecing.
ReplyDeleteHappy almost birthday. I had no idea there was a 1/4" mark on the clover tips. I have one package and only use them for binding but I can see loads of uses for them now. Thanks!
ReplyDeletekatie,
ReplyDeletei love your header, it's adorable! did you make it yourself? and i can't wait to see your patterns...i like paper piecing as well, because there is less room for user error. how are you liking the gypsy wife? i am currently doing the quilt along, and it is giving me a hard time (hence the user error, lol). thanks so much for tip, i just broke down and purchased those clips and used them for the first time, but didn't know about that added feature. hope you'll stop by on the 11th :)
Thanks for the clover clip idea, I'm paper piecing a block right now that is a ferris wheel and I think that will help alot!!!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you. Stop over and visit my sometimes sorely neglected blog. I do tend to post a lot of giveaways there but also interest stories and maybe a funny or two from my crazy life.
ReplyDeleteWHOA! I did not know that about the Clover clips! I do, however, know that they are wonderful, so I guess they just got wonderfuller!
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to meet you and I wish you a happy birthday, too! Looking forward to reading and seeing more from you!
Happy Birthday! I completely forgot about the 1/4" mark and do not know what I ever did without Wonder Clips. I've been hoarding/collecting red fabrics to make a mostly red and white quilt - have a lot of WIPs though, like everyone else. ;) I look forward to seeing your patterns as you create them!
ReplyDeleteStopping by from the blog hop. Happy Birthday!! Yes, I definately sense the love of nature themes coming thorough on your beautiful projects. I am trying my hand at designing quilt tops. I've done my first. Look forward to seeing more of you on the hop.
ReplyDeleteI did not know that about the Wonder clips. I think I might definitely get some now!
ReplyDeleteI haven't bought into the clips yet, but that 1/4" mark seems so useful! I'm so glad you've released that pattern. I can't wait to make it!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! Thanks for sharing today ... so cool your own a plane!!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! I am also thinking about the Juki and I've been meaning to clean my kitchen for days. :/ We are actually out of spoons right now! I like doing the laundry because it is in my sewing room and I can manage both at the same time. lol! So cool you have a plane and a longarm!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I remember that mini - the bugs under glass! I have a little bug lover at my house, so it caught my eye ; ) Happy birthday, Katie!
ReplyDeleteawesome post, Katie! Great to read more about you!
ReplyDelete:) Kelly @ My Quilt Infatuation
I never even noticed the 1/4 mark on the wonder clips. Great post - I especially enjoyed reading your "what you should about me" section.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Clover clips are so helpful! I resisted getting them and thought I could get by without another "gadget" but I'm so glad that I put them on my Christmas list. I think it's so interesting that you were drawn to quilting by FMQ and paper piecing -- two skills that cause many quilters starting out to quake in fear :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is a great tip about the clips. I've never felt a reason to buy them but now you have me rethinking that. Also, I love your blog name and that you have 2 ginger girls. My son is just barely a ginger - was a brighter red like mine but it's lightened up every year and now he's a light strawberry. Sometimes I don't even see the red anymore.
ReplyDeleteLove the name Big Smokey! I used a HQ 16 once when in Africa, plugged it into their plug which was a different amp than the HQ could handle and I fried that machine-OOPS! Glad you could get yours working after the fire!
ReplyDeleteYour kid quilts are just darling!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite colour is red too! I have brown hair but secretly long for red hair like my lovely stepdaughter's. (This song is for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVN_0qvuhhw&feature=kp. Persevere a bit, and it will make sense.)
ReplyDeleteI tried to learn how to fly but I got so terribly motion sick that persevering did not seem like a clever plan. I am also very envious of Big Smokey.
I did not know those clips have a quarter-inch mark!
Happy birthday!
Fellow New Blogger here ~ I finally made it to your page - Happy Birthday! Trying to get around to all of them... Great tip on the Wonder Clips! I love them so much... They are great when hand-piecing also!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! It is always lovely to meet another Gemini. I often stop by your blog. Thank you for the tip about the Wonder Clips. I learn something new everyday!
ReplyDeleteI followed the link from Plum & June and found you and I am so happy I did! I enjoyed reading your post - your writing is friendly and fun to read. Your projects are beautiful! Thank you for the Repository block pattern. I have been searching for something for a project I'm working on and nothing was quite right until I saw this - I know it is going to add that something I was looking for to my project. I will definitely be back to visit.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this post, and seeing your finished projects--that monkey is super cute. I'm looking forward to seeing your finished gypsy wife quilt. Thanks for the wonder clips tip, I hate using pins and am always searching for an easier way, I'll have to try this.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid to try paper piecing! It seems so complicated but you make it look so easy, especially with the clips.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had advise about the controller - because that would mean that I owned a long arm - which I don't. Hope it works out for you. Clever use of the clips. Stopping by to meet you on the hop, I'll be participating in July. Until then, happy quilting.
ReplyDeleteI love that wonder clip tip! I wish I could offer advice for Big Smokey, but I don't have any experience there. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI love Art Gallery fabrics too and can't wait to make something with Arizona. Your Mermaid pillow is just gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the 1/4 inch tip on the WonderClips! I never noticed it before!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you! We have a pretty similar style - modern scrappy, and the same favourite colours :).
ReplyDeleteThe wonder clip tip is genius! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou win the best tip award for the Wonder Clips. Nothing stinks more than ripping a paper piece seam out. Thanks for the pattern and the laugh ("I strive for sanitary") LOL. Amen to that.
